Martine:
Martine is an eleven year old girl who has it good in life. Has a house, parents and everything she could ask for. But the good part of that life comes to an end when a fire starts up during a night in Martine's house. She escapes out her bedroom window and is met outside of her house by people surrounded on the sidewalk and streets as they watch the house go up in flames even as firefighters come to try to put the fire out. Once everything is settled, Martine finds out that her parents were unable to get out in time and died. Now an orphan, Martine is forced to be shipped from England where she lived with her parents, now to far away South Africa. When she arrives in Africa, Martine meets her new friend Tendai, who works on the game reserve owned by her grandmother Gwyn Thomas. Martine meets a new friend soon after she arrives in Africa. But this friend isn't like an ordinary friend, and not a person but a giraffe. Stranger yet it is a white giraffe, who Martine named Jemmy become close friends. Jemmy even takes Martine to his secret cave where he stays during the day. Jemmy even saves Martine from getting bit by a deadly cape cobra. "Everything happens for a reason Jemmy", Martine says that to Jemmy as she is with him one night looking up at the stars.
Gwyn Thomas:
Gwyn Thomas is Martine's grandmother and the person who is given the responsibility to watch Martine after her parents died in the house fire. Martine and Gwyn Thomas have never met before so the situation is hard for the both of them. Gwyn Thomas is and owner of her own Safari reserve that Tendai works at. Gwyn Thomas is the person that first introduced the White Giraffe to Martine as she told her that the white giraffe is known to leave foot marks on the ground from where it goes. "Grace came to tell us that she's had a vision of you being the child in the African legend, the one that has power over all the animals."
Tendai:
Tendai is a worker for Gwyn Thomas on her safari reserve. He is also the first person to meet Martine once she gets to Africa. Tendai takes Martine to his Aunt Grace. Grace is an older woman who explains to Martine that she thinks Martine has a "gift". This gift is that she is connected to the animals like no one else is. She believes that fate brought Martine to Africa to protect the white giraffe. Tendai takes Martine into the safari in
search of the white giraffe. At the safari, they see some poachers attacking animals in the wild. Tendai and Martine have rifles to protect themselves from the animals they are hunting which puts them in a rough spot because they were also spotted by the poachers. They could get into huge trouble if caught.
