The theme of this book is "Everything happens for a reason" because it shows how one eleven year old girl goes through losing her parents on her birthday. As her father is kissing her goodnight he says to her "Don't worry Martine, everything happens for a reason"(Pg.6). To moving to Africa to live with a grandmother that she has never met before or even knew she existed. She goes through going to a new school having to meet new people and make new friends. She then gets information on how she has some kind of a gift "Martine I believe you were brought here because you have a gift and connect to the wild animals"(Pg. 37), after seeing a white giraffe out her window the first night in Africa. I also shows adventure because of how she has to go through the safari with Tendai to find the mysterious white giraffe. Jemmy (the white giraffe) also takes Martine on an adventure of their own by taking her to his secret cave and taking her out into the safari at night to look at the stars. When Martine learns that the poachers take Jemmy she has to get her friend back which leads her on to yet another small journey where she has to go up against the poachers.

The second theme of the book is compassion towards the ones you care about, even when you just meet them. When Martine's parents died, she was taken in by multiple people who cared about her and wanted to help her out in her time of need. Her only living relative Gwyn Thomas wrote a letter saying that if anything were to happen to Martine's parents she would take responsibility of Martine herself. Martine didn't feel as if Gwyn Thomas seemed like she wanted to take Martine so she didn't want to go to
Africa. She was taken in by a lot of different families that could take her until they could no longer support a grieving girl. The last family she stayed with before leaving for Africa was the Morrison's. Mrs. Morrison was Martine’s English teacher at the school she attended. When Martine finally decided that she would go to Africa Mrs. Morrison assured her, "now remember Martine, you always have a home here with Mr. Morrison and me"(Pg. 15). Mrs. Morrison even took her shopping for clothes that would fit her for the African weather with the money that Gwyn Thomas sent her. "I can't get a dress, a snake may bite me"(Pg. 15). When Martine arrived in Africa she was alone just as she has been since her parents died. She was alone because no one was there to pick her up even though Gwyn Thomas was suppose to be there. An hour after she had landed and still no one was there for her until Tendai appeared. Tendai was Gwyn Thomas’ employee on the game reserve. Tendai and Martine soon became friends.
